Learning Philosophy - Example company brochure

This document describes Competence and Learning’s view on ways of learning in DNV and what we believe will make a greater impact. This is our learning philosophy and the role we need to take in order to implement it.

Andrew Gerkens's insight:

This is a really lovely overview of how 70:20:10 is being communicated across an organisation. The eBook includes the background, objectives and success measures for DNV's 70:20:10 based approach to development.

Here is a link to a presentation delivered by DNV talking in more detail about their approach. Slide five is fantastic - it details their 70:20:10 roadmap over a three year period. It includes the key actions they are taking across three focus areas:

a. to develop the culture,

b. to apply 70:20:10,

c. to develop supporting tools and technology.

Thanks for sharing this Andrew - great example. I would keep the content simpler for my organisation, but some excellent content to 'model' off.

Misconceptions and concerns regarding the 70:20:10

Misconceptions and concerns regarding the 70:20:10 | 70:20:10 | Scoop.it
I've been considering the 70:20:10 model of learning. The basics of it suggest the following: 70% of what we learn is done on the job / via our own methods. This has been galantly called 'social learning' or 'informal learning'.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

Sukh raises some of the common concerns about 70:20:10, but as you can see from my and other responses (including Charles Jennings), I believe many of his assumptions are a result of a misunderstanding of the framework.

VIDEO: Charles Jennings on the change in focus from training to performance | 70:20:10 | Scoop.it
In the last ten years, more organizations have begun to follow the 70:20:10 model, where workplace learning—either on-the-job troubleshooting or assistance from colleagues—is acknowledged as being a larger driver of learning than traditional instructor-led training. Charles Jennings, founder of the 70:20:10 Forum, pioneered the implementation of the model as part of a learning organization while he was the chief learning officer at Reuters in the early 2000s.
Andrew Gerkens's insight:

Charles shares his experiences in implementing 70:20:10 as CLO of Reuters. He talks about training and learning vs. performance. He also talks about measuring social and workplace (informal) learning and the expanded role and skills required of the learning function.
