Think you're all for gender equality? Your unconscious may have other ideas

Think you're all for gender equality? Your unconscious may have other ideas | Box of delight | Scoop.it

The words of my doctor from earlier that morning were still ringing in my ears when I found myself slamming the brakes of my car to avoid a nasty collision. An incompetent driver was cutting across two lanes at a roundabout just in front of me. Still perspiring somewhat I carried on to drop off my screaming child with the nanny. It was a hectic morning.

Quick, think of a physicist.

If you’re anything like me, you probably didn’t have to think very hard before the names Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton popped up.

But what if I asked you to think of a female physicist? What about a black, female physicist?

Implicit bias: Is everyone racist? - BBC News | Box of delight | Scoop.it
Few people openly admit to holding racist beliefs but many psychologists claim most of us are nonetheless unintentionally racist. We hold, what are called "implicit biases". So what is implicit bias, how is it measured and what, if anything, can be done about it? David Edmonds has been investigating.

Project Implicit - unconscious bias

People don’t always say what’s on their minds. One reason is that they are unwilling. For example, someone might report smoking a pack of cigarettes per day because they are embarrassed to admit that they smoke two. Another reason is that they are unable. A smoker might truly believe that she smokes a pack a day, or might not keep track at all. The difference between being unwilling and unable is the difference between purposely hiding something from someone and unknowingly hiding something from yourself.

When You Can't Afford to Make a Mistake, This’ll Keep You Sharp

When You Can't Afford to Make a Mistake, This’ll Keep You Sharp | Box of delight | Scoop.it
Peter Baumann suggests that our biases can get a bad rap, but that they’re essential. He sees them as unconscious inclinations that we’ve developed over time, and most of the time, they reflect actual knowledge we’ve acquired about how the world works. They set the frameworks within which we live our lives. Our bias toward feeling safe, for example, keeps us (mostly) out of trouble, while a bias towards certain flavors sets us parameters for selecting the dish we’d like to eat at a restaurant. Of course, our biases are only as intelligent as we are, so occasionally they're pretty stupid.

A neuroscientist explains the unconscious racial biases behind deadly police shootings

A neuroscientist explains the unconscious racial biases behind deadly police shootings | Box of delight | Scoop.it
Owing to Facebook’s new live stream feature, most of the world has seen the video depicting the moments after Philando Castile, a 32-year-old cafeteria manager, was shot and ultimately killed by a police officer. The shooting occurred not even 48 hours after another black male was shot and killed by a cop in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In both cases, the victims had concealed handguns. And in both cases, the video footage appears to indicate that the individuals who were shot actually presented no legitimate threat to the officers.

What it comes down to is a difference in perception. In the subconscious minds of many police officers, an armed white man is just a citizen exercising a constitutional right, while a black man carrying a gun is an imminent danger.
