Why Pedagogy First, Tech Second Stance is Key to the Future

Why Pedagogy First, Tech Second Stance is Key to the Future | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it
When implementing and successfully sustaining a mobile learning initiative, it is imperative not to allow the device to drive instruction. Lessons, curriculum, schools and districts should never be built around technology. Everything we do in education should be built around learning. Thus, if the ultimate goal is to improve student outcomes then the role of any mobile device initiative should be to support or enhance learning.

Building an Educational App? Read This First (EdSurge News)

Building an Educational App? Read This First (EdSurge News) | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it
Over the next four years, nearly a billion students will enter middle and high school, and if recent projections are accurate, most of them will have a smartphone in their pocket. These students will decide what apps they use and when they use them, and could potentially take large parts of their education into their own hands.

Despite this potential, there are few break-out apps that cater directly to students. The education app charts are led by games and classroom tools, and the largest student-focused apps—Duolingo, Quizlet, and recently PhotoMath—only serve a thin slice of student needs, leaving huge potential for new entrants.

We’ve spent the last two years at Socratic studying how students learn with the Internet. In hopes of inspiring the development of more student-focused apps, we’d like to share some of our insights about how students use their phones while studying today.

Why the Next 10 Years of Educational Technologies will Smash the Last 10 | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

When you think about the advance of technology in society in the last decade, the progress has been phenomenal – just take a look at these examples to see how far we have come in such a short space of time. Now, think about education. Think about the technology in your school ten years ago – perhaps a computer suite with an unreliable bank of PC’s; CD-ROMs; discs; slow, irrelevant programs; staff scared of using IT; and so on.

Defining Critical Thinking

Defining Critical Thinking | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it
Everyone thinks; it is our nature to do so. But much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or down-right prejudiced. Yet the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought. Shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Excellence in thought, however, must be systematically cultivated.

Microsoft, Google and Facebook compete on AI development

Microsoft, Google and Facebook compete on AI development | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

No matter where the future goes, Microsoft will have a place in it. The company’s "conversation as a platform" offering, which it unveiled in March, represents a bet that chat-based interfaces will overtake apps as our primary way of using the internet: for finding information, for shopping, and for accessing a range of services. And apps will become smarter thanks to "cognitive APIs," made available by Microsoft, that let them understand faces, emotions, and other information contained in photos and videos.

Microsoft argues that it has the best "brain," built on nearly two decades of advancements in machine learning and natural language processing, for delivering a future powered by artificial intelligence. It has a head start in building bots that resonate with users emotionally, thanks to an early experiment in China.

And among the giants, Microsoft was first to release a true platform for text-based chat interfaces — a point of pride at a company that was mostly sidelined during the rise of smartphones.

After losing the mobile battle, can Microsoft win the AI battle? In January 2016, The Verge described the tech industry's search for the killer bot. In the months that followed, companies big and small have accelerated their development efforts. Facebook opened up a bot development platform of its own, running on its popular Messenger chat app. Google announced a new intelligent assistant running inside Allo, a forthcoming messenger app, and Home, its Amazon Echo competitor. Meanwhile the Echo, whose voice-based inputs have captivated developers, is reportedly in 3 million homes, and has added 1,200 "skills" through its API.

Microsoft is proud of its work on AI, and eager to convey the sense that this time around, it's poised to win.

The Digital Writing Process

The Digital Writing Process | Learning Technologies | Scoop.it

Now, with nearly 20 years of middle and high school teaching behind me, I still respect the writing process approach and its benefits. I also recognize that the nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources. Of course, today’s composers still must meet the commonly accepted conventions of the genre in which they are engaged, but our visual digital culture creates different demands than did the primarily print text-based world.

"The nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources". We completely agree with this phrase. Our way of writing is changing more than we notice. I figure that adults notice this more than young people, because this last group were born with the Internet. Nevertheless, its very important to learn how to write properly, this article provides the tools and the practice we need.
