How to Approach Writing a Resume When You're a Jack of All Trades

How to Approach Writing a Resume When You're a Jack of All Trades | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Many Lifehackers do more than just one thing, and that can make getting a job difficult because employers often prefer you're great at one specific thing.
Trish Sadar's insight:

Many employers or recruiters have a checklist if you will of what the position requires and the competencies for the ideal candidate.  Resist the urge to make yourself look like a CEO when you are applying for an entry level position.

My tips: Dummy proof your resume!

1.  Target your summary and competencies at the top of your resume to reflect the experience the employer is seeking

2.  Highlight the experience and skills that are relevant to the position you are applying for.  (make them top and center)

3.  If possible, re-purpose your accomplishments with language that is industry language

What Recruiters Look At During The 6 Seconds They Spend On Your Resume | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Why you didn't get the job.
Trish Sadar's insight:

This is such a super article!

I can share with our readers until I am blue in the face how imporant it is to target and fine tune a resume; if you resume is seen at all -- only seconds are spent.

That means that a decision is made in seconds whether you are a fit or not.  The first page of your resume is vital.  That is why the summary needs to showcase the experience that is relevant to the position in the words and phrases that mirror the industry and position.

What they found from the study of recruiters:

In the short time that they spend with your resume, the study showed recruiters will look at your name, current title and company, current position start and end dates, previous title and company, previous position start and end dates, and education.

Career Donkey » Getting Your Resume Past HR Filters

Career Donkey » Getting Your Resume Past HR Filters | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
Trish Sadar's insight:

Getting your resume past HR filters is important if you want to stand a chance of getting hired.

Most of the time when you apply on a web-based application system you may feel that your resume goes into a black hole don't you?  Well, what you may or may not be aware is that due to the pure volume of resumes and the number of job positions open at any given time -- most companies have technological tools to help with the application and screening process.

In order to assist with reviewing resumes many organizations have a filter that assists with reviewing and selecting resumes that meet the qualifications, experience, competencies, etc. of the position.

While I am not familiar with this company (Career Donkey), there are many different ways to educate yourself with the knowledge and skills to better target your resume to increase the likelihood of being seen.

Remember the job of your resume is to land you the interview.

In this article they discuss the results when they surveyed hundreds of HR professionals and 55 percent responded that the biggest problem they see is a failure to use a resume effectively.

Well....of course it is!  I know that we have been discussing this topic often; however the 3 tips they mention I agree wtih 100%

1.  Differentiate your resume

2.  De-clutter; make sure your resume is relevant to the job and industry you are applying

3.  Make sure that the most important information is on the first page...remember recruiters if they see your resume may only spend seconds

Your resume on a candy bar!

Your resume on a candy bar! | Effective Resumes | Scoop.it
It's certainly a sweet way to land a job. Nick Begley, 32, of New York, used the label of a candy bar to sell himself to potential...
Trish Sadar's insight:

This is a perfect example of someone who is willing to do what others are not!

When it comes to competing against thousands of motivated, extremely talents students for those extremely valued internships you shouldn't merely do what all others are doing.  You don't want to be average, the goal is to make yourself stand apart from the mountains of resumes.

Once in my career, I was applying for a position that I was missing one of the essential requirements.  I applied through the normal channels online; however, I knew that based on my experience only I would not be selected for the first round or potentially any rounds.  What did I do you ask?

I found out the name for the recruiting manager who was handling the job, and I wrote a handwritten note with chocolates and sent with a messenger.  Wouldn't you know that not only did I make it through the screening, I went all the way through to be considered one of the top three candidates.

You have to ask yourself, did I put the time, effort, and creativity into this application process.  This candy bar example showed the potential employer that this person took the time and effort to go the extra mile.  He will probably do that as an intern!

Do you have any stories that you want to share with us?  Don't be shy!
