Tackling food waste is vital to reducing carbon emissions and should be at the forefront of Australia’s climate policies, advocates say.

It is estimated that 7.3 million tonnes of food is wasted in Australia each year, costing the economy more than $20 billion annually.

Food waste is also a major environmental issue, with around eight per cent of global carbon emissions coming from wasted food, which rots in landfill and releases methane into the atmosphere.

Food rescue charity OzHarvest has recently teamed up with the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) to release a new report examining Australia’s progress on tackling food waste.

Nestlé has announced that it is collaborating with other industry partners to design a fully recyclable, compostable fibre cup as part of the NextGen Consortium and Cup Challenge. The move is a part of the company's efforts to address the problem of plastic pollution, and a step towards its goal of making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

All commercial enterprises have a duty to try to minimise waste and take all opportunities to prevent, reuse, recycle or recover waste. With the introduction of recycling operations it is easier to comply with regulations and enables you to be better prepared for future legislation

All foodservice and hospitality companies with over 250 employees should have a food waste target in place and be measuring, reporting and taking action on food waste by 2026, according to a new industry action plan. Developed by WRAP, the Hospitality and Food Service (HaFS) sector Action Plan defines the steps companies must take to help to deliver the UK Food Waste Reduction Roadmap which sets out how the largest retailers, suppliers, and hospitality and food service companies will contribute towards the SDG 12.3 target of a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030.

The UK is a global leader in measuring food waste and supporting international food waste prevention projects, since it has been found that hundreds of thousands of tonnes of good food is wasted by the UK food industry every year.

The SDG 12.3:  “By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses”
