Digital learning is real-world learning. That's why blended on-campus and online study is best

Digital learning is real-world learning. That's why blended on-campus and online study is best | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Social distancing and lockdowns have disrupted university study for the past 18 months. Students are understandably stressed as shown by a dramatic drop in student satisfaction across Australia reported in the annual Student Experience Survey. Federal Education Minister Alan Tudge has drawn attention to this in calling for a “return” to on-campus study.

But the world is increasingly digital. Old notions of lecture halls will not help graduates to thrive in their careers. We need university study that supports students to succeed by preparing them for a digital future.

5 Things to Remember When Designing a UX for Digital Learning

5 Things to Remember When Designing a UX for Digital Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"UX creation is essential because its purpose is to help learners easily navigate through digital learning modules and classes without getting confused. The learner shouldn’t have to think about the learning process—the learning material should guide them through the module or class. But this is easier said than done. These days, digital learning classes are no longer simple slide decks, but fully-fledged learning experiences consisting of interactive videos, gamified activities, links to learning portals, simulations, and whatnot. This is why there are five  basic points every instructional designer should keep in mind when designing modern digital learning classes."

Not only is UX design important for creating an uncomplicated and pleasurable learning experience, effective UX design can also help to set the tone for the eLearning experience. First impressions are important and a sloppy user interface can leave a bad taste with learners that may extend throughout the learning experience. What does your UX design say about you?

Digital learning rebooted

Digital learning rebooted | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

In March 2020, UK higher education embarked on a sudden shift to digital learning. In the vast majority of cases, it wasn’t a designed and fully realised transformation of teaching and learning.

It was an emergency response to an unprecedented situation that relied on upskilling staff rapidly enough to enable them to deliver the remainder of their courses, and assess them, in as effective and equitable way as possible.

The extent of this digital shift, and the tools, techniques and platforms used, varied not only between universities but also within them, depending on the demands of different departments and the confidence and capabilities of the staff.

"Re-envisioning the role of academic librarians for the digital learning" by Adriana Ciccone and Liz Hounslow

"Re-envisioning the role of academic librarians for the digital learning" by Adriana Ciccone and Liz Hounslow | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Academic librarians cannot escape the implications of the knowledge economy and the pervasion of technology which effects everything that we do. Similarly, we must be prepared to teach our students how to cope in this knowledge society and how to develop the necessary information and digital literacy skills to be productive members of society in a digital environment. This article explores the first eighteen months of our experience as digital curriculum librarians in a large project at the University of South Australia (UniSA), UniSA Online. We have taken this opportunity to critically reflect on being embedded librarians within such a strategic and unique project. We examine the key cultural, pedagogical and technological challenges we have faced in delivering resources, support and services to the project team.

A major report on digital learning from Arizona State University

A major report on digital learning from Arizona State University | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

On April 4th, Last week Lou Pugliese joined the Future Trends Forum to describe a forthcoming research project he’d just completed. I’d heard about the research secondhand and was intrigued. One text described it as looking into institutional return on investment (ROI) for digital learning. So I convinced Lou, senior innovation fellow and managing director technology innovation Action Lab at Arizona State University, also co-creator of Blackboard, to appear on the Forum and give the community an advance look into the report’s findings, before they were published:

Stop teaching. Start Learning with Educational Games

Janet is a student in a top university in Singapore. I had arranged to meet her to chat about her experience with classroom learning. We agreed on a cafe at Bugis called Mellower Coffee. One that is popular with students, she says.

Great! A new hangout.

I arrived and saw her at a corner. Plugged into earphones, she was engrossed in some videos. Youtube it seems. But this video was different. It looked like the video of a professor teaching in a class. But instead of being in a classroom, she is in a very nice cafe and having a nice coffee.

Larissa Ramirez's curator insight, May 26, 1:38 PM
I believe being able to watch a professor's lecture on an application such as Youtube in your favorite coffee location such as Starbucks is a perfect example of the integration of technology in education. This reflects on the growth of eLearning, which allows students to engage with educational content in their own comfortable flexible setting. It’s a perfect example of how technology can transform traditional educational methods, offering students the ability to learn at their own pace and in settings that best suit their needs.

Frugal Innovation in Digital Learning

Frugal Innovation in Digital Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on what makes a good and accessible digital assignment for faculty and teachers who are not comfortable with digital tools but open to learning and experimenting. An approach I’ve often seen is what I’ve recently started calling the kitchen sink approach to “onboarding.” In this approach, a suite of tools or a single tool that can do “everything you can imagine and more” is shown or given to a faculty member to integrate into their already existing course or assignment. The hesitant but eager faculty member, initially excited to try something new, quickly becomes overwhelmed and frustrated as they attempt to make the tool live up to the promises of “doing everything and more.”

The three broad learning theories most often utilized in the creation of instructional environments are Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism. These theories, however, were developed in a time when learning was not impacted through technology. In other words, they do not address learning that occurs outside of people, that is stored and manipulated by technology. Nowadays…

With the widespread use of technology and social media in society, where communications are increasingly fragmented and non-linear, catering for the needs of learners has probably never been more challenging. Digital Learning Theories and Models That All Educators Should Know

Digital Learning Theories and Models That All Educators Should Know | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
You’ve probably heard about the benefits of digital learning: It’s engaging, student-centered, often collaborative, and can increase student achievement.

But here’s the catch:

You and your students won’t reap these benefits if you don’t purposefully plan your use of technology.

Too often, teachers think of technology as something to check off of a list. “Does this lesson use technology? Nope…How can I sprinkle some in?” Using technology merely for the sake of using technology isn’t effective teaching.

Instead, here are five digital learning theories and models that can help you tap into the benefits of technology and enhance student outcomes.

Digital education is not just training in digital literacy | CCCB LAB

Digital education is not just training in digital literacy | CCCB LAB | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

For some time the debate on digital technologies has been present in the educational environment. However, the true challenge is not whether to use technology or not, but to rethink education with it. Today’s technologies define a new learning environment that modifies our relationship with contents, requires new forms of teaching-learning, and blurs the boundaries between classroom and home, formal and informal education. In this sense, it it not only a case of developing a set of skills and abilities of a technical nature, but a combination of behaviours, specialised and technical knowledge, working habits, arrangements and critical thinking. Talking today about digital education is, therefore, something more than just talking about training in digital literacy.
