Need Creative Inspiration? Do Something Boring

Need Creative Inspiration? Do Something Boring | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Doctors use the â€śuniversal pain assessment tool” to measure how uncomfortable their patients are. It’s a simple mechanism made up of smiley (and sad) faces. At one end of the spectrum is “pain free,” and on the other is “unimaginable, unspeakable pain,” with “tolerable” and “utterly horrible” falling in between. It’s not terribly scientific, but the tool helps medical professionals download your pain data from a little chip in your brain, so to speak, making it one of the best and fastest assessments at doctors’ disposal.

It’s not just pain that’s difficult to quantify–so is the human experience generally. But researchers have devised tools to study other mushy concepts, too, including creativity. And in the process we’ve learned there’s at least one thing that tends to nudge people into measurably more creative thinking: boredom.

Cutting out distractions doesn’t just clear space to focus. As author and podcaster Manoush Zomorodi explains, it can also lead to boredom-induced creativity.

CCM Consultancy's curator insight, November 6, 2017 12:56 AM

Participants were asked to leave their phones out of sight while in transit, including ignoring any impulse to walk and text, etc... This helped clear their minds for creative ideas. So the next time you’re getting coffee, as you slowly make your way to the front of the queue, just let your mind wander instead of scrolling Instagram or checking email.

Writer's block is something that has always plagued the writing profession. It can drive you mad, and sometimes gets worse and worse.

Penelope's curator insight, July 19, 2017 12:14 PM
Every writer's nightmare―dreaded writer's block. If you haven't experienced it yet, you will. Life ebbs and flows, and that includes our writing.

The best way to deal and get writing again? Perhaps your body, mind, and soul need a break. Maybe take a short trip. I'm going to take day trips once a week that require only one tank of gas. First destination on the list? Marjorie Kinnan Rawling's old homestead in Cross Creek. Perhaps my inspiration will be hiding amongst old oaks where she wrote her Pulitzer prize-winning novel, "The Yearling."

Are we born creative or can we learn to be creative? New research provides insights into creativity, and this post looks at five myths that many of us have about creativity. The five myths are listed below, and they are explained in depth in the post.

1. Creativity is something you're born with

2. You can't control when inspiration will strike

3. You can't learn to be creative

4. Creativity happens in isolation (the myth of the lone creator)

5. Creativity comes to those with time and means

There are many resources that are included in this post. You may also find some ideas on ways to help your students learn to become more creative, and you as well.

8 Female Leaders On How To Overcome What's Holding Women Back

8 Female Leaders On How To Overcome What's Holding Women Back | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

“Who or what is your worst enemy?” If you ask women leaders this question, you might find a lot of the answers to be “myself.”

It doesn’t matter that we’ve come a long way. We’re educated, we’re climbing--and excelling--in corporate ranks. When you’ve been fighting so hard to get to the top for so long, it’s easy to convince yourself that luck had a hand on your success.

According to authors Katty Kay and Claire Shipman in their book The Confidence Code, women tend to struggle with a lack of confidence disproportionately. When something goes wrong professionally, women blame themselves while crediting others when things go right.

Kay and Shipman also found that women are more likely to be perfectionists and hold themselves back from asking for a raise or even answering a question until they’re 100% sure the outcome will be as they predicted.
