Is empathy the great resignation’s secret solution?

Is empathy the great resignation’s secret solution? | Employee Engagement | Scoop.it

There’s a lot being said right now about the “great resignation.” And rightly so. According to Microsoft’s 2021 Work Trend Index, two in five workers (41%) worldwide are likely to consider leaving their current employer within the next year. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Labor has spent several months reporting record-breaking numbers of US workers […]

Karen Loftus's insight:
Building an empathetic culture should therefore be a key and immediate priority for any organization looking to recruit and retain top talent.

Yet the beautiful thing is that the impact reaches beyond that; there are also tangible business benefits for organizations that do so.

According to the survey, nearly 9 out of 10 (87%) workers feel that mutual empathy between them and their leaders increases their efficiency.

The same number (87%) report it boosts creativity, 86% believe it enhances innovation, and 81% think it increases company revenue.

Micromanagement is not the answer

Micromanagement is not the answer | Employee Engagement | Scoop.it

Over-monitoring employees can sink productivity and engagement. Here are three better ways to get results.

Karen Loftus's insight:
The reason micromanagement is so detrimental to worker happiness and productivity can be explained in part through self-determination theory, a long-established body of work on human motivation.

The theory posits that to feel motivated, people have to fulfill three core needs: competence, autonomy, and relatedness (or being part of a team). Micromanagement cuts against all three of these.

How COVID shook up the labor market

How COVID shook up the labor market | Employee Engagement | Scoop.it

The majority of the missing workforce are people 55 and older — some 2.4 million people — who either retired early by choice because they could financially or low-income retirement-age workers who were axed at the start of the outbreak.

Karen Loftus's insight:
Businesses are also continuing to face an extremely tight labor market, driven by substantial gains in household wealth and the “Great Resignation” with record numbers of Americans quitting jobs (particularly in retail, hospitality, healthcare, and technology).
